Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young have unearthed recordings of their September 20, 1969 show at NYC’s Fillmore East–which took place during their first tour, one month after their famed Woodstock performance–for a new live album. Live At The Fillmore East, 1969 comes out October 25 via Rhino (pre-order), and you can hear the previously unreleased version of “Helplessly Hoping” from the show now.

“[We] have the tapes, and they sound so real,” Neil Young says. “We mixed at Sunset Sound – the analog echo chamber, no digital echo. We’re staying all analog throughout the production…Pure. Analog. No digital – an Analog Original.”

Reminiscing about the show, Stephen Stills offers: “The acoustic part of the show took care of itself, but now that we had equipment and Dallas [Taylor, drums] and Greg [Reeves, bass] and sizable shows to do, we just went for it. What we lacked in finesse, we made up for in enthusiasm…A band on the run. Expecting to fly.”

Graham Nash adds, “Hearing the music again after all these years, I can tell how much we loved each other and loved the music that we were creating. We were four people reveling in the different sounds we were producing, quietly singing together on the one hand, then rocking like f**k for the rest of the concert.”

The setlist includes songs from Crosby, Stills, and Nash’s 1969 self-titled debut album, Neil Young’s 1969 album Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, early versions of two songs from 1970’s CSNY album Déjà Vu, a song from Stills and Young’s previous band Buffalo Springfield (“I’ve Loved Her For So Long”), and a few solo performances, including one of Graham Nash singing “Our House” to the song’s inspiration, Joni Mitchell, who was in the audience. Check out the full tracklist below.

Neil Young and Stephen Stills are playing together at a Bridge School benefit show in California this October, and Neil has a few New York shows (including Farm Aid) this month. Graham Nash’s upcoming tour hits Carnegie Hall with Judy Collins in October.

Rest in peace David Crosby.
